New Article Published!

Wed Jul 8, 2009, 1:43 PM
Hey everyone! I just had an article published over at Handmade News! Whee! [link]

It's called "Wood Type: A 19th Century Innovation Inspires 21st Century Design." [link] And it's about wood type. Oh yes. So if you like type, printing, or bookish things, head over and read it. [link] Leave a comment if you feel so inclined. [link]

I'm hoping to get a regular gig writing or possibly editing for Handmade News, and it would look really good if this "guest" article did well. Fingers crossed. [link]

(Oh yeah, and all those links [link] I put in this post all go to the article. So you don't need to click on all of them. Just one.)

  • Mood: Joy
  • Listening to: computers grinding away
  • Reading: A Splendor of Letters by N. Basbanes
  • Watching: the shadows lengthen
  • Playing: not much
  • Eating: it all up
  • Drinking: Tea. Earl Grey. Hot.

This is how my characters are born from parts of myself. I did a self-portrait series of mad scientist images. Then I did a project combining text and images where I used many of the mad-scientist self-portraits in a mock newspaper. From that came several of the characters in my Frisland stories, plus the capital city Darwin (not to be confused by the other city of that name). From there came more stories and a comic series plus some 3D "artefacts." All from one silly idea. But that's usually how it works for me.

Your notebooks are relatively small. If you were to make them about the size of an actual book, how much more would it cost?

I love you long time.
You know, I'm not sure. The main thing would be finding a large enough piece of suede (for cross-stucture, both covers and the straps are cut from a single rectangle, so it has to be length = cover width + cover width + strap length). And two matching pieces of wood veneer of the right size. Also finding paper that I can fold to the right size with the grain direction still parallel to the spine.

I have been thinking about making a larger version, but the issues above are what have stopped me so far. I might be able to do it if I made the strap shorter and then spliced on longer pieces for the closure.

Were you interested in having me make one for you? I can always do one up, and if it turns out to cost too much, I can just list it on Etsy. About what size were you thinking?
Well, I don't have much money right now, but if you had some stuff up on etsy, I would probably be able to purchase one in a few months. My thought on those notebooks is that if you made a journal in the same style you're using, it might cost a little bit more, but I know it would sell- especially because it is handmade. Since size seems to be an issue, a 6 1/2 x 5 inch book would still be relatively small.
I dunno, it's just a suggestion, so no hold up.

Cool. Well, I plan on making a larger version as soon as I finish the rest of the little ones I'm working on. If they turn out, I'll definitely put them up on Etsy, so you can look for them there if you're interested.

Thanks again for the nice comments!
